KLAUS LUDWIG CLEMENT CELLO

Klaus Ludwig Clement Cello, 2024   Klaus Clement, master luthier of Liepzig Germany, was initially known to us as the master maker at the renowned workshop of Roderich Paesold. After a period of partnership with Hagan Weise, Clement opened his own workshop in Leipzig in 2010 where he works with his wife, Stefanie, to make fine instruments for players international.  In addition to his making career, Clement literally "wrote the book" on varnish and varnish technique and is a frequent lecturer on the secrets of historical varnish formulations and applications. His instruments reflect his intense research in this field as well as his personal studies in acoustics and how material and techniques used affect sound and tone. Clement is a member of the Entente Internationale, the Association of German Violin Makers and Bow Makers and the Violin Society of America.  He further sits as a jurist on the Nurnberg Chamber of Crafts.

RAINER LEONHARDT CELLO

Rainer Leonhardt, born into a lineage of violin artisans in Mittenwald in 1963, began mastering his craft at the local technical school, earning his diploma in 1982. Apprenticeships under seasoned makers honed his skills, culminating in a master’s degree from the Munich Chamber of Crafts in 1990.

In his workshop, Leonhardt blends Mittenwald’s traditions with modern techniques, meticulously crafting each instrument by hand. He selects spruce and maple tonewoods from Germany, Bosnia, Austria, and Italy, inspired by Italian and German legacies.

His craftsmanship has earned acclaim from institutions like the French Violin Maker Association and the Bavarian Chamber of Crafts. In 1997, he was named best European participant in the European Association of Violin and Bow Makers competition.

Leonhardt’s creations are renowned for their resonance and clarity. His cellos, crafted with precision from aged woods and adorned with deep red varnish over a golden base, epitomize his mastery, each showcasing clear, strong, and focused tones.

SCROLLAVEZZA-AND-ZANRE CELLO

Elisa’s dedication to understanding and continuing traditional violin making methods from the Parma, Italy region produces instruments of integrity and classical beauty. “Erclos”, the name of this cello, is Italian for the Greek god Hercules. The strength of the sound is balanced with the lyrical soprano voice. The cello responds quickly with clear tone quality supported by a colorful palette through the upper positions. Projection is consistent through the different positions and strings. The model is a comfortable size and weight, perfect for long rehearsals. The traditional oil varnish is a warm, light umber evenly applied, not antiqued. This instrument would be ideal for a conservatory student or professional player.

COLLIN-MEZZIN CELLO

The Collin-Mezin family became a well-respected tradition of violin makers from the mid-1800s through the early 1900s in France. The grandfather, Charles JB Collin (dit Mezin) created the slightly opaque gold brown varnish and blackened chamfers we often associate with quality Mirecourt violins today. He won multiple gold prizes at the Paris Exhibitions in the late 1800s. In addition to his personal instruments, Charles JB Collin established a workshop first in Paris, then later moved back to Mirecourt, the roots of his own production. When he died, his son continued the workshop production despite the devastation of WW1 to the region. The workshop ended with the third generation and WW2. This particular cello, we believe, is from the workshop in the early 1900s.

The classic varnish, and delicate outline give the cello an attractive look and comfortable feel. The cello is recently restored after many years of use and retirement. The neck angle is adjusted for modern playing. The sound reminds us of the timber and color of older recordings from the masters. The cello rings beautifully and responds easily.
